Utah Man Arrested for Religiously Motivated Stabbing at Mall Kiosk

A 48-year-old man is behind bars in Salt Lake County after police say he stabbed a Muslim worker multiple times at a shopping mall kiosk, telling officers he intended to kill people based on their faith.

The attack occurred Monday inside Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City. The victim, who worked at a kiosk inside the mall, sustained what police described as "multiple stab wounds all over his body" and was bleeding heavily when help arrived. Bystanders managed to pin the attacker to the ground before officers reached the scene.

Peter Michael Larsen was booked into Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. According to court documents filed Tuesday, Larsen told police he had deliberately targeted the victim because of his Muslim faith. Investigators wrote in an affidavit that Larsen stated he "intends to kill Muslims" and represents "a substantial danger to the public if released based on his violent actions, ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events."

Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who spoke with the victim's family, described how the assault unfolded. Larsen approached the worker, asked his name and religion, then requested a bottle of water. As the victim turned to retrieve the water, the stabbing began.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition. A fundraising campaign launched by a friend indicated the man was stabbed 15 times and required multiple surgeries. Larsen was also hospitalized for injuries sustained during the struggle with bystanders.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations and other Muslim rights organizations swiftly condemned the attack. Advocacy groups have documented a troubling pattern of Islamophobic violence, citing the rise in hostility following the September 11, 2001 attacks and citing more recent contributing factors including anti-immigration rhetoric, white supremacist activity, and tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict. In 2023, a six-year-old Muslim child was stabbed to death in Illinois, with the perpetrator sentenced to 53 years in prison before dying in custody. A 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque killed five people.

Author James Rodriguez: "This case shows the real-world stakes when extremist ideology meets opportunity, and it underscores why law enforcement is taking such statements seriously."
