Lagerald Vick, who started for the University of Kansas during their 2018 Final Four run, has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder following a July 4 shooting in Memphis, Tennessee.
The 29-year-old guard was taken into custody on Saturday and also faces a charge of using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. According to arrest documents reviewed by ESPN, the shooting victim was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the back. The man told police he attempted to flee after a confrontation when he realized the other person was armed. In a photo lineup, the victim identified Vick as the shooter.
Vick's bail was set at $1.5 million, and he was scheduled for arraignment on Monday. This arrest comes as he faces additional felony charges in a separate incident earlier this year involving theft and breaking into a former girlfriend's home.
Vick played for the Jayhawks from 2015 to 2019, appearing in 117 games with 61 starts. He averaged 9.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists during his college career, finishing his senior season in 2018-19 with a career-high 14.1 points per game. Going undrafted by the NBA in 2019, he played professionally across multiple countries including Taiwan, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay and New Zealand from 2019 through 2024.
During his freshman year at Kansas, Vick was the subject of a Title IX investigation after allegations that he punched and kicked a female student. He was never officially charged in that matter.
Author James Rodriguez: "From Final Four starter to facing serious felony charges is a stark fall, and the pattern of accusations dating back to his college days makes this arrest feel like the culmination of a troubling trajectory."
