Square Enix's upcoming turn-based RPG Final Fantasy Resonance will launch across multiple platforms on October 22, but players on Xbox Series X|S will miss out on a physical copy. The game is heading to PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and more, yet only the Xbox version will be digital-only.
The standard edition retails for $49.99 across all platforms where physical copies exist. Retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart are stocking the standard physical edition for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch owners. However, Xbox players have no choice but to purchase through the Xbox Store at the same price point.
Another quirk worth noting: the Switch 2 version arrives on a Game-Key Card rather than a traditional cartridge. That format change may disappoint collectors accustomed to standard Switch releases, though the game will still be purchasable physically through the usual retail channels.
For those willing to spend extra, Square Enix offers a Digital Deluxe Edition priced at $59.99 for PS5, Xbox, and PC. The Switch versions are not yet available in deluxe form. This premium tier includes the base game, preorder bonuses, and the Magitek and Grimoire Deluxe Pack, which adds cosmetic items and quality-of-life gear like a Magitek Armor key for your chocobo, an exclusive Limit Burst unlock, a Mastery Ring, potions, and ethers to jumpstart your adventure.
All preorders, regardless of edition, unlock a set of in-game bonuses. These include a Magitek Airship Passkey that transforms your airship's appearance, armor pieces like a Chestplate of Preparation and Blessed Cuirass, a Knight's Greatsword, and consumables such as tents, potions, and a Phoenix Down.
Final Fantasy Resonance marks the series' venture into HD-2D graphics, a visual style gaining traction in modern RPG design. The game reimagines the story from the discontinued mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, stripping away the gacha mechanics to deliver a single-player experience. Expect classic Final Fantasy elements: world crystals driving the plot, summons in battle, chocobos, airships, and the obligatory character named Cid. Square Enix has also arranged for legendary heroes like Cloud, Zidane, and Lightning to appear as summons you can call into combat.
Author Emily Chen: "The no-physical-on-Xbox decision is a baffling move in an era when collectors still care about owning their games, but at least the Game-Key Card compromise on Switch 2 means Nintendo fans get something tangible."
