Activision has confirmed that its newly released PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 support crossplay between PS4 and PS5 consoles, putting to rest weeks of confusion among players.
The company's official Call of Duty Updates account spelled out the feature on social media, clarifying that players on either PlayStation generation can matchmake together in multiplayer. Owners of the Season Pass can also play with those who didn't purchase the premium content across both titles.
The crossplay confirmation arrives as a relief to a player base that had grown frustrated with the ports' launch. When Activision announced Iron Galaxy was handling the remasters, sparse details left fans guessing about core features. The surprise debut last week compounded the problem, with players immediately spotting technical concerns: a capped frame rate and low resolution prompted widespread criticism about what many called bare-bones ports.
Despite the backlash, the games have moved quickly up the PlayStation Store's best-selling charts. Both Black Ops titles are priced at $39.99, though PlayStation Plus subscribers can grab each for $19.99 as a limited-time promotion. DLC runs $29.99 per game, dropping to $9.89 for PS+ members.
The new versions won't support crossplay with PS3 or any other hardware platform, Activision made clear. That limitation hasn't deterred players from revisiting the 2010s classics on current gen hardware.
Activision remains focused on the franchise's future as Black Ops rereleases draw nostalgic crowds. The publisher is moving ahead with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the next mainline entry in the long-running shooter series.
Author Emily Chen: "Activision waited way too long to address what should have been standard information at launch, but at least the crossplay support is solid now."
