Rockstar Games is rolling out its next major update to GTA Online starting July 14, bringing a full-scale heist centered on robbing the Kortz Center art museum. The operation promises to be one of the most elaborate criminal undertakings yet in the online game, complete with prep missions, multiple approaches, and a significant payout for those who can pull it off cleanly.
Mansion owners will gain access to a new art studio that serves as the heist's planning hub. From there, players undertake a series of setup missions before attempting the main event. Like previous heists, you can go in guns blazing or take a stealthier approach, though Rockstar is sweetening the deal for quiet professionals: silent completion nets considerably more cash than a loud approach.
The real draw for longtime fans, however, lies in the paintings themselves. Players will be able to loot artwork from the museum and display it in their mansions. More importantly, Rockstar is rolling out new paintings on a weekly basis to keep players coming back, and these aren't generic pieces. Each painting is loaded with references to other Rockstar titles.
The art selection reads like a studio retrospective. One painting directly references the infamous death scene of Roman Bellic from GTA 4. Another evokes the aesthetic of the Red Dead series. A third features a sprawling crowd scene packed with recognizable Rockstar characters, including CJ from San Andreas and Dutch from Red Dead. The level of detail suggests Rockstar is rewarding franchise veterans who notice the layered nods.
The update also brings fresh wheels to the game. New vehicles will arrive with the heist, though Rockstar hasn't revealed specifics yet. Players expecting to spend their newly stolen millions on flashy rides won't have to wait long for details.
The timing of this update carries additional weight for the franchise. GTA Online has operated on a predictable release schedule, with major updates hitting in summer and December. But GTA 6 launches in November, creating uncertainty around the online game's future. While a GTA 6 online component is almost certainly in development, Rockstar hasn't announced when it will launch or what it will look like. An early 2025 debut for GTA Online 2.0 remains speculative at this point.
For now, the Kortz Center Heist represents the clearest sign of Rockstar's continued commitment to the current game's ecosystem. Whether it marks the final major update before a full pivot to the next generation remains an open question.
Author Emily Chen: "The Easter eggs show Rockstar still knows how to speak to its hardcore audience, but the real story is whether this heist is a swan song or just another chapter."
