Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can now access Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, the 1994 Game Boy classic that launched the character as a standalone video game hero. The title joins a fresh wave of retro additions to the service's expanding library.
Despite its official name as the third Super Mario Land sequel, Wario Land barely features Mario at all. The game instead focuses on establishing Wario as a treasure-hunting antihero who pursues gold and riches across side-scrolling stages. Players who discovered the character through later Wario Land installments will recognize the franchise's core gameplay DNA here, with its focus on exploration and wealth accumulation.
Alongside Wario's debut, Nintendo added two additional Game Boy titles to the standard Switch Online tier. The Sword of Hope II, a JRPG from publisher Kemco, and Fortified Zone, a top-down shooter developed by Jaleco, round out this month's Game Boy offerings.
Switch Online + Expansion Pack members gain access to an extra layer of nostalgia with Dr. Mario & Puzzle League, a Game Boy Advance compilation that bundles two puzzle games into a single release.
The additions mark Nintendo's ongoing effort to refresh its classic game catalog, giving modern players access to titles that defined handheld gaming in the 1990s and early 2000s. All Game Boy titles are playable on both Switch and Switch 2 for subscribers.
Author Emily Chen: "Wario Land's arrival on Switch Online feels long overdue, but the supporting lineup this month is pretty thin unless you're specifically hunting for obscure puzzle and shooter nostalgia."
