Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has added his voice to mounting pressure on Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner to withdraw from the Maine race following serious sexual assault allegations that have roiled the party's campaign strategy in a key battleground state.
Sanders said Tuesday he had directly spoken with Platner about "the best path forward for Maine" and recommended he step aside given what he called "very serious allegations." The independent senator's intervention came hours before Platner faced yet another claim of sexual misconduct, compounding the crisis threatening to derail Democratic hopes in a closely watched Senate contest.
The allegations surfaced Monday in a Politico report featuring Jenny Racicot, 41, a woman who previously dated Platner. Racicot described an incident from five years ago in which she said Platner forced her to have sex despite her repeated objections while heavily intoxicated. She characterized the encounter to CNN as rape. Platner has denied both this allegation and the subsequent claim reported later Tuesday.
The scandal ignited a wave of prominent Democrats urging Platner to abandon his candidacy. Party officials seeking to manage the fallout have signaled they are working to construct a replacement selection process, though details remain under wraps.
Devon Murphy-Anderson, the Maine Democratic Party's executive director, released a video statement late Tuesday clarifying the party's position. She said officials are crafting an "open, inclusive, transparent and fair" process to identify a new nominee but will not share specifics until Platner formally exits the race. Murphy-Anderson also pushed back against what she characterized as efforts by Platner's team to influence the selection, stating: "We have repeatedly reiterated to Graham Platner's team that they have no role in determining our next Democratic nominee for the US Senate, nor in determining what this process looks like."
The party leadership's move appeared designed to wrest control of the nominating process from Platner's camp while keeping internal deliberations confidential until a formal transition occurs.
Author James Rodriguez: "The speed with which Democratic heavyweights have moved to distance themselves from Platner signals the allegations carry sufficient weight to reshape Maine's Senate map before the general election cycle fully ignites."
