Palworld Keeps $29.99 Price Tag Through 1.0 Launch, Bucking Industry Trend

Pocketpair is holding the line on Palworld's price. The developer announced it will not raise the cost of the monster-taming game when version 1.0 releases this week, keeping it fixed at $29.99 despite earlier signals that a price increase was possible.

The decision surprised many players. Palworld's Early Access page on Steam has carried a disclaimer since early 2024 stating that "the price of the game may increase at or closer to the official release," creating expectations that launch day would trigger a bump upward.

Instead, Pocketpair framed the move as gratitude. "After much thought, we have decided not to raise the price of Palworld following the 1.0 release and will keep it at $29.99," the studio said in a statement. "We are incredibly proud of how far Palworld has come. Thanks to the amazing support of our players, it has become a success beyond our wildest dreams. As a small way of saying thank you, we'll be keeping the price at $29.99."

Those words ring true given Palworld's trajectory. The game has amassed 40 million players since Early Access launched, a figure likely to climb once 1.0 goes live. At launch, Palworld shattered sales records and concurrent player counts, a surge so massive that studio head Takuro Mizobe acknowledged the developer struggled to process the financial windfall.

The momentum led Pocketpair to strike a partnership with Sony, creating Palworld Entertainment to expand the IP beyond the game itself. A PlayStation 5 version followed, broadening the player base further.

Success, however, has not come without friction. Comparisons between Palworld's creature designs and Pokemon sparked accusations of copying, though Nintendo and The Pokemon Company opted to pursue a patent challenge rather than file a copyright lawsuit. The two companies initially sought 5 million yen (roughly $30,000) each plus damages and an injunction to block the game's release. A ruling is expected later this year.

As the 1.0 launch approaches, Pocketpair has signaled major changes ahead. John Buckley, head of publishing and communications at the studio, has teased 27 pages of patch notes covering mechanics overhauls and new content. He advised existing players that while they can carry over their saves, starting fresh is recommended to fully experience the overhaul.

"Players can continue their existing saves if they wish, as we want to respect the time and effort you have put in," Buckley explained in a Discord post. "However, due to the large number of changes to the game, including overhauls to mechanics and new content, we believe that starting a new character will give you the best experience of Palworld."

Author Emily Chen: "Keeping prices stable while other studios chase full-price sequels feels almost quaint in 2024, but it signals confidence that content quality will drive engagement, not artificial entry barriers."
