Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce say 'I do' at MSG in star-studded New York bash

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are now husband and wife. The couple exchanged vows Friday night at Madison Square Garden in a celebration that drew some of entertainment and sports' biggest names to midtown Manhattan nearly three years after their first connection.

The wedding announcement came via a Swift spokesperson, who confirmed that the nuptials took place at the iconic arena. Around 7:20pm local time, a message blazed across screens outside the venue: "JUST MARRIED."

Rather than traditional wedding parties, the couple chose a more intimate approach to the roles. Swift's brother Austin served as her Man of Honor, while Kelce's brother Jason, a retired Philadelphia Eagles center, stood as his Best Man. Actor Adam Sandler, a friend of the couple, officiated the ceremony.

The guest list read like a who's who of pop culture and professional sports. Model Gigi Hadid, actors Bradley Cooper, Hugh Grant, and Ethan Hawke, musician Ed Sheeran, and music producer Jack Antonoff were among the attendees. NFL stars Cooper Kupp and JuJu Smith-Schuster also made the trip. Swift's longtime publicist Tree Paine and childhood friend Abigail Anderson Berard rounded out her inner circle in attendance. Stevie Nicks, whom Swift has long cited as a mentor, was reportedly slated to perform.

Permits filed ahead of the event suggested as many as 1,000 guests attended the celebration. Security around MSG was extensive, with nearby streets closed to traffic in the days leading up to Friday's ceremony. Fans gathered in the summer heat outside the venue, eager to catch any glimpse of what many were calling "America's royal wedding."

The Empire State Building joined the festivities, illuminated in light blue sparkle in honor of the occasion.

Swift and Kelce's path to marriage began in July 2023 when the Kansas City Chiefs tight end attended one of her shows at Arrowhead Stadium. Though they didn't meet that day, Kelce spoke about his disappointment on his podcast New Heights, noting that Swift must preserve her voice for her 44-song setlist. He'd made her a friendship bracelet, a nod to a tradition among her fans during the Eras Tour.

Swift's mother, Andrea, played a crucial role in their introduction. After seeing Kelce's podcast comments go viral, she reached out to a cousin for information about him and later arranged for the two to meet. In her Disney+ documentary The End of an Era, Andrea recalled encouraging her daughter to "start doing something different." Swift later told Time magazine that the pair met quietly after he attended her show and kept their relationship private at first.

By September 2023, Swift had returned to Arrowhead to watch Kelce play. The two were spotted leaving the stadium together in his convertible. What followed was a pattern of public appearances: attending each other's events, sitting with one another's families at games and concerts, and becoming fixtures at major moments. Their most visible declaration came when Swift joined Kelce on the field after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in February 2024.

The couple's relationship has woven itself through Swift's recent work. Her album The Tortured Poets Department, released in April 2024, included love songs loaded with football references. On "So High School," she sang "Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me," referencing a 2016 interview clip where Kelce chose to kiss her while playing the game, a video that resurfaced during their early courtship.

In June 2024, Kelce made history by joining Swift on stage at Wembley Stadium during her Eras Tour, marking the first time she'd ever had a partner perform with her at one of her concerts. Months later, Swift announced her new project, The Life of a Showgirl, on Kelce's podcast, a move that itself became part of the album's narrative. Songs like "The Fate of Ophelia," "Wood," and "Wi$h List" contain explicit references to their relationship and dreams of domestic life together.

The engagement announcement came shortly after Swift's appearance on New Heights. She posted a photo carousel showing the couple in a flower-filled yard with a caption that read, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."

Author James Rodriguez: "Swift and Kelce have managed something nearly impossible in the social media age: they built a genuine, evolving relationship in semi-public view without it turning into a tabloid circus until the right moment."
