AOC backs El-Sayed in fierce Michigan Senate primary battle

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's increasingly contentious Democratic primary for US Senate, throwing the weight of her national profile behind the progressive physician as he competes against establishment-backed rivals.

The New York congresswoman's move marks her first endorsement in a competitive Senate primary this cycle. In remarks to the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez framed the race as consequential beyond Michigan politics. "Despite our ideological differences and whatever disagreements there are in the party, every single one of us sees this moment as existential," she said. "I think many people are willing to put aside differences in order to give us the best chance at winning. And I think that Abdul gives us that right now."

El-Sayed, a former public health director running on a populist economic agenda, already carries the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders. His platform includes banning corporate tax incentives, new taxes on billionaires, eliminating medical debt, and strengthening antitrust enforcement to combat price gouging.

The primary has become one of the cycle's most competitive Democratic contests, functioning as a proxy battle between the party's insurgent and mainstream wings. El-Sayed currently leads in polling against two formidable challengers: US Representative Haley Stevens, backed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and senior Democratic leadership, and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, who has secured support from Senator Elizabeth Warren and other prominent Democrats.

Control of the Senate looms large in November's midterms, with Democrats seeking to flip the chamber from Republican hands. Retaining the Michigan seat vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters is viewed as critical to that effort. The Democratic nominee will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in the general election. Rogers narrowly lost the seat in 2024 to Democrat Elissa Slotkin by less than half a percentage point, despite Donald Trump winning the state.

El-Sayed responded to the endorsement on X, writing that Ocasio-Cortez "has spent her career taking on the powerful on behalf of everyday people, and she has shown all of us what courageous, smart, values-driven leadership looks like. I'm deeply honored to earn her endorsement. Onward to victory."

Author James Rodriguez: "Ocasio-Cortez's move signals that progressives see a real opening in Michigan, and that El-Sayed's challenge to the Democratic establishment is no longer fringe."
