Donald Trump's Great American State Fair opened to sparse crowds, extreme heat, and a cascade of embarrassments that left critics calling it everything from a "dud" to "absolutely dreadful."
The centerpiece of the event, a relatively small ferris wheel, lost power on opening day. Multiple states declined to participate despite organizers claiming 56 states and territories would be represented, citing high costs. A Confederate flag that appeared at one booth sparked immediate controversy and prompted a sponsor to withdraw.
The opening ceremony, billed as a musical extravaganza, fell apart almost entirely. Performers including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, the Commodores, Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, and Flo Rida either pulled out or never committed, with several saying they hadn't known the event would carry a political undertone. The crowd instead witnessed Trump holding what amounted to a campaign-style rally where he repeated familiar talking points about America being the "hottest country anywhere in the world."
The irony was sharp: the Virginia booth closed on Tuesday due to extreme heat, and the fair itself was forced to shut down early on its second day because of a storm.
Pricing became another flash point. A pretzel cost $25. Turkey legs went for $23. Lemonade was $9. Those numbers circulated widely online, amplifying negative coverage that outlets including Slate, the New Republic, and USA Today had already delivered. USA Today's characterization was particularly cutting: witnessing the fair's failure felt "like watching your high school bully host a party that no one attends."
Fox News attempted damage control by broadcasting live from the fair on Monday, hoping to champion the event. The effort backfired. Video documentation showed what the channel's positive framing tried to hide: the fairgrounds were nearly empty.
The event exposed a basic problem: a historically unpopular president cannot simply manufacture enthusiasm by slapping his name on a large gathering. Attendees, when they showed up, faced scorching heat, a non-functional centerpiece attraction, and food prices that felt extracted from a hostage situation.
Author James Rodriguez: "This wasn't just a fair that underperformed, it was a meticulously documented case study in how spectacle without substance collapses in real time."
