When Bandai Namco unveiled Roger Jr. for Tekken 8's Season 3 roster at EVO 2026, the reveal trailer paid direct homage to a decade-old viral clip from Australia showing a man landing a punch on an aggressive kangaroo. The scene was set when the animal had a dog locked in a headlock, and the man intervened with a swift strike to its snout.
The clever callback came about because of a push from Katsuhiro Harada, the former Tekken director who shaped the franchise for over 30 years before departing Bandai Namco. Harada confirmed on social media that he had championed the idea after the team decided to bring the marsupial fighter back to the series.
"Back in September of last year, when we decided to bring Roger back, I sent the team a YouTube link to 'that famous video' because I wanted us to recreate it," Harada wrote. He noted that some younger team members had never encountered the original clip.
The concept nearly didn't make the cut. Harada revealed that around springtime, the development team wavered on whether to include the recreation due to time constraints. Tekken 8 game director Kohei Ikeda ultimately made the call to push forward. "We absolutely have to do it," Ikeda reportedly said.
Harada admitted he had lost faith in the gag before seeing the final result. "I thought, 'They probably won't do that gag anymore. They've probably forgotten about it,'" he recalled. "So when I saw it yesterday, it genuinely made me smile."
Roger Jr. had been absent from the franchise since 2007's Tekken 6, missing entirely from Tekken 7. The reveal trailer, which appeared at the end of a recent Bob gameplay trailer, marks his return to the fighting game. Fans will get a full character showcase at EVO France on October 11, 2026.
The reveal comes as both Harada and Ikeda have exited Bandai Namco. Harada left in December 2025 and has since launched VS Studio in partnership with SNK Corporation, the company behind The King of Fighters and Fatal Fury. Ikeda, who spent 20 years at Bandai Namco as Tekken's game director, has also moved on from the company.
Author Emily Chen: "Harada's fingerprints on that kangaroo punch may be the most fun bit of Tekken's behind-the-scenes lore in years."
