IO Interactive, the Danish studio behind the James Bond game 007 First Light and the Hitman franchise, announced layoffs on social media after losing a crucial partnership on its fantasy game project.
The developer disclosed that a working relationship with an unnamed external partner on its original IP fantasy title had ended, forcing the studio to make immediate staffing reductions. IO did not specify how many employees were affected but committed to supporting impacted staff through the transition.
In a statement to the gaming community, IO Interactive emphasized that the layoffs were separate from the recent launch of 007 First Light, which the studio celebrated as a critical and commercial success. The developer maintained its dedication to the fantasy project despite the partnership breakdown. "This wonderful universe will see the light of day," the statement read.
Evidence points to Xbox as the departed partner. Documents leaked during the 2023 FTC versus Microsoft trial revealed that Microsoft had the title, then called Project Dragon, slated as an exclusive for Xbox and PC under Xbox Game Studios publishing. The collapse of that arrangement appears to have triggered the staffing crisis.
The timing creates a turbulent backdrop for IO Interactive. Microsoft is executing a broad "reset" of its Xbox division that is expected to include studio shutdowns, game cancellations, and significant workforce reductions. Unionized Xbox workers are mounting resistance to the restructuring effort and pushing for employment protections, though the outcome remains uncertain.
IO Interactive's situation reflects broader instability in the gaming industry as major publishers reassess portfolios and spending. The studio has navigated multiple ownership changes over the years before securing independence, and this latest setback tests its resilience once again.
Author Emily Chen: "IO's optimism about Project Fantasy's future rings hollow without a publisher, and the industry should watch whether Microsoft's reset extends beyond Xbox to affect external partners."
