The US Supreme Court declined to intervene in Donald Trump's effort to overturn a $5 million judgment issued against him by a jury in 2023. The justices' refusal to hear his appeal leaves intact a verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing E Jean Carroll, a former magazine columnist, and for defaming her afterward.
Trump had argued the trial was fundamentally unfair, contending that the judge erred by permitting jurors to consider evidence related to his alleged past sexual misconduct. A lower court had previously upheld the jury's 2023 decision and rejected those arguments, paving the way for Trump's Supreme Court petition.
The justices' action Monday marks the end of that particular appeal pathway for the former president. Without the nation's highest court taking the case, the original judgment stands as decided.
Author James Rodriguez: "Trump ran out of escape routes on this one, and the Supreme Court made clear it had no interest in second-guessing the jury's findings."
