Retailer listings have sparked rumors that Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer a 60 frames per second mode on current generation consoles. Technical analysis suggests those claims deserve serious skepticism.
Digital Foundry's examination of available GTA 6 footage, including screenshots and video clips, found nothing to support the possibility of 60fps gameplay on PS5 or Xbox Series X and S. The sheer visual complexity of the game world creates a fundamental obstacle.
"Unfortunately, the level of detail evident in the trailer, preorder screenshots and other, more recent footage seems extremely challenging to scale down in a way that allows for a 60fps mode," said Will Judd of Digital Foundry.
The core problem stems from how simulation-heavy games tax the CPU of hardware now nearly six years old. GTA 6 compounds this challenge with its expansive open world and the speed at which players can traverse it. Those demands rival or exceed what games like Dragon's Dogma 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 place on the systems. Digital Foundry's prediction: 30fps across the board, with 60fps appearing impossible to achieve.
Even the PS5 Pro, despite its added power, likely cannot deliver 60fps for GTA 6. The enhanced console focuses on improved ray tracing and PSSR upscaling rather than raw CPU performance. A 40fps mode on PS5 Pro might be feasible, though that remains unconfirmed speculation.
Rockstar's own track record offers another clue. Grand Theft Auto 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 all launched at 30fps on consoles, with the developer prioritizing visual fidelity over framerate. The studio does not build games around 60fps delivery.
The 60fps rumor is just one of several GTA 6 claims circulating online. Recent reports of a physical disc version turned out to be false, with Rockstar opting for digital-only distribution. That decision triggered retailer boycotts and fan frustration, but analysts point to clear commercial reasoning behind the choice.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Author Emily Chen: "Until Rockstar makes an official statement, treating GTA 6 framerate rumors as gospel is a mistake that happens too often in gaming discourse."
