Rockstar Games opened preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 on June 25 without releasing a third official trailer, deflating weeks of fan speculation that a new video would arrive alongside the purchasing window.
The studio had announced preorder details and shared fresh cover art the previous week. That timing sparked widespread belief among players that a third trailer would follow to reignite hype and encourage purchases. Instead, Rockstar delivered a batch of new screenshots showcasing various game details.
The missed opportunity stung harder because Trailer 2, released in May 2025, still displays an outdated release date that has already passed. Many fans expected Rockstar to use a new trailer to correct the record and capitalize on the preorder moment.
Social media erupted with frustration. "Weird decision to not have Trailer 3 go live now," one commenter posted on X, wondering if nothing would emerge until July. Another wrote: "Personally, I'm really disappointed. Even though Rockstar never officially announced anything, we've been waiting for such a long time now."
Some fans flagged what they saw as unusual radio silence at such a critical juncture. One user noted that any other publisher facing a preorder window with no gameplay footage this close to launch would trigger alarm bells about quality issues. A second fan dug into GTA V history, pointing out that Rockstar waited nine days after opening preorders in 2012 to drop a trailer then, suggesting the current timing might follow a similar pattern.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated publicly that marketing matters regardless of franchise size. He compared it to major film releases, noting that studios pour resources into promoting even established franchises like Mission: Impossible because audiences need reasons to engage before launch.
No official word has arrived on when Trailer 3 or gameplay footage might appear. Rockstar plans to launch a significant GTA Online update in July, which will likely dominate the marketing calendar for weeks. That could mean a gameplay reveal gets postponed until later in the summer, or Rockstar may skip a traditional third trailer and move straight to showing actual gameplay.
GTA 6 launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The standard edition costs $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition carries a $99.99 price tag and includes cosmetics, weapons, and exclusive shop and mission access. The game will not ship on physical disc at launch.
Author Emily Chen: "For a franchise this massive, leaving money on the table by skipping a trailer moment feels like confidence bordering on arrogance, and players rightfully sense something is off."
