Microsoft Greenlights Live-Action Sea of Thieves Film with Marvel Director at the Helm

Microsoft has greenlit a live-action adaptation of Sea of Thieves, the pirate sandbox game that has remained a fixture on Xbox and PC since its 2018 launch. Xbox head of content Matt Booty confirmed the project to Entertainment Weekly, revealing that producer Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Marvel films including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is attached to shepherd the production.

Cretton will produce the film but is not expected to direct it himself. Booty outlined the creative challenge ahead, noting that translating the game to screen requires a fresh approach to storytelling. "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community," Booty said. He emphasized that the game's cooperative nature and distinctive tone should shape how the film takes form.

Sea of Thieves has proved a sustained hit for developer Rare since its PC and Xbox One launch six years ago. The game expanded to PlayStation 5 and current-generation consoles in 2024, broadening its reach across platforms. Over that span, Rare has layered in new regions, gameplay modes, story content, and notable crossovers including Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and the Monkey Island franchise.

The movie announcement comes as Xbox navigates internal restructuring. Multiple studios face potential closure or divestment, though Microsoft has not officially addressed the scale or timing of those changes. Booty's green light for the Sea of Thieves film signals confidence in at least some of the company's growth initiatives even as harder decisions loom elsewhere.

Rare has committed to supporting Sea of Thieves for years to come despite uncertainty around the broader organization. The game's enduring player base and content roadmap suggest the franchise remains a cornerstone property for Xbox, making its jump to film a natural extension of that investment.

Author Emily Chen: "A live-action Sea of Thieves actually makes sense if they nail the cooperative spirit, but Marvel's track record with gaming adaptations remains spotty at best."
