Rockstar hands out free GTA 5 next-gen upgrades starting tomorrow

Rockstar Games is opening the door to free upgrades for Grand Theft Auto V players who own digital copies on PS4 or Xbox One, with the transition beginning June 18. The offer extends to the current-generation versions released in March 2022, marking a significant move as the company prepares for the franchise's next chapter.

The catch: only digital owners qualify for the free jump to PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. Physical copies do not receive the upgrade treatment. All progress, stats, and earnings accumulated in GTA Online will transfer seamlessly to the newer platforms, so players can pick up where they left off without penalty.

At $39.99 on current-gen systems, Rockstar is essentially gifting what would otherwise cost nearly $40. The upgraded versions deliver noticeably better performance than their last-generation counterparts, running at a smoother 60 frames per second rather than the original 30 FPS experience. While not a complete graphical overhaul, the performance boost makes for a substantially more fluid gameplay experience.

The timing of this generous offer is no accident. Rockstar announced the upgrade alongside details about a major GTA Online expansion arriving in July, centered around a new heist operation. The free upgrade and incoming content represent one final concerted push to keep players engaged with the 13-year-old game before its inevitable decline.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches this November, which signals the beginning of the end for its predecessor's commercial window. As anticipation for the sequel builds, sales of GTA 5 are expected to taper off. Giving away current-gen upgrades and rolling out fresh heist content serves as both a thank you to the existing player base and a strategic play to maintain momentum through the summer months.

What remains unclear is whether GTA Online progress will carry forward into GTA VI's multiplayer component. Rockstar has yet to announce details about how the new game's online mode will function or whether players will retain their character development and accumulated wealth from Vice City's predecessor. Players have invested over a decade building out their virtual lives, and many hope to bring at least some of their accomplishments to the next generation. But a full reset would not be unprecedented for a new online ecosystem.

The gaming community is bracing for the next significant reveal about GTA VI, with an official showcase expected sometime this summer. Rockstar may strategically delay that announcement until after the July online update lands, ensuring the new heist content doesn't get overshadowed by the splash of next-generation marketing material.
