Call of Duty's Treyarch Loses Studio Head After 22 Years

Mark Gordon is stepping down as head of Treyarch, the studio behind the Black Ops franchise, after more than two decades with Activision. The departure, announced via social media, marks a significant leadership shift for one of Call of Duty's most established development teams.

Gordon's next move remains unannounced. He will be replaced by co-studio heads Yale Miller and Kevin Hendrickson, both long-time Activision veterans with extensive credits across the Call of Duty series.

The exit arrives as Treyarch faces an uncertain future for its flagship franchise. The studio is not expected to deliver a new Call of Duty game for roughly two years, barring unexpected changes to development schedules. Modern Warfare 4 is slated for later this year from Infinity Ward, while Sledgehammer Games is anticipated, though unconfirmed, to release an entry next year.

Whether Treyarch will develop another Black Ops entry remains murky. Black Ops 6 performed well commercially, but Black Ops 7 faltered as a financial disappointment, signaling a potential decline for the sub-franchise after years of dominance.

Gordon's departure follows a similar exit by David Vonderhaar, Treyarch's studio design director and the architect of the Black Ops multiplayer experience. Vonderhaar left to launch his own independent studio.

Recent moves by Treyarch have sparked speculation about the studio's next direction. Reports surfaced of potential remasters for Black Ops 1 and 2 on modern hardware, with PlayStation backend listings fueling fan theories. Activision has not confirmed the projects. Treyarch's recent update to Black Ops 7 introduced a playlist called Black Ops Classic, which resurrects old-school maps and adjusts gameplay to echo the original games, a move some observers believe may be testing groundwork for the rumored re-releases.

Author Emily Chen: "Gordon's departure after over two decades signals real upheaval at a studio trying to figure out what Black Ops means in a franchise that's already bloated with annual releases."
