Aldon Smith, 49ers defensive star who battled off-field demons, dead at 36

Aldon Smith, the San Francisco 49ers' seventh overall draft pick in 2011 who became one of the league's most dominant defensive ends before personal troubles derailed his career, has died at 36. The team announced his death Saturday but did not provide a cause.

Smith's rookie season announced his arrival as a generational talent. He recorded 14 sacks and 27 quarterback hits as a first-year player, finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting and cementing himself as a cornerstone of San Francisco's defense.

His second year cemented that promise. In 2012, Smith posted 19.5 sacks, a franchise record that still stands, along with 29 quarterback hits. He earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections and helped carry the 49ers to the Super Bowl. Over six NFL seasons with San Francisco, Oakland and Dallas, he was instrumental in three consecutive NFC championship game appearances.

But Smith's professional trajectory collided with persistent legal troubles. Multiple arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence marked his early career struggles. In 2013, he faced felony charges for possessing illegal assault weapons. A 2015 arrest involving DUI, hit-and-run and vandalism led the 49ers to release him.

The NFL suspended him repeatedly for violations of its personal conduct and substance abuse policies, restrictions that shaped the remainder of his playing days. He finished his career with a final season in Dallas in 2020, then formally retired in 2023.

The 49ers released a statement mourning his passing. "We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," the organization said. "Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into."

Author James Rodriguez: "Smith had all the gifts to be a Hall of Fame caliber pass rusher, but the gap between his on-field brilliance and personal struggles tells the harder story of how much talent alone doesn't guarantee anything in this league."
