The FBI descended on a Cleveland voter registration nonprofit Thursday, seizing computers and phones and fanning immediate fears that the Trump administration is weaponizing federal law enforcement against voting rights organizations ahead of November's midterm elections.
Agents raided the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, which conducts grassroots voter registration work across the state. Board member Prentiss Haney said investigators also visited homes of people affiliated with the group and conducted interviews. The bureau did not explain the specifics of its investigation, though Haney said agents appeared focused on alleged fraud tied to the 2024 election.
"This raid is a full-on coordinated assault weaponizing the justice department and DHS against people who are fighting for working-class voters and Black voters to make sure they have access to the ballot," Haney said.
The timing aligns with a broader push from the Trump administration's justice department. A top official in acting attorney general Todd Blanche's office recently instructed prosecutors to prioritize voter fraud cases. That directive came after Ohio's Republican election chief, Frank LaRose, referred 1,084 non-citizens who appeared on voter rolls to federal authorities last fall. Federal investigators have also collected voter records from at least six Ohio counties in recent months.
Local elected officials and civil rights groups quickly condemned the action. Shontel Brown, an Ohio Democratic congresswoman, called it "an unprecedented attack on democracy." Sherrod Brown, the Democratic incumbent running for reelection, described reports of the raid as "deeply disturbing." Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb demanded transparency, stating that either the FBI should disclose the basis for its actions or the public had every right to question whether civic participation was being unfairly targeted.
Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center for Justice, characterized the raid as "an outrageous fishing expedition" and "an egregious abuse of law enforcement for political ends." He framed it as part of a pattern of federal scrutiny aimed at voting infrastructure before the midterm elections.
The move reflects Trump's continued push to cast doubt on election integrity. The former president has repeatedly and falsely claimed widespread voter fraud persists across the country, recently fixating on California's vote-counting procedures without presenting evidence. The pattern raises alarm that Trump may attempt to contest Republican losses in the upcoming midterms.
