The discovery, captured in live webcam footage Thursday afternoon, has triggered an active criminal investigation by US Park Police and the Department of Interior.
Park Police responded shortly after 11:30 a.m. to reports of vandalism on the west lawn. The "8" marking appears most prominent in aerial views, while the "6," "4," and "7" are fainter. Officials have collected grass samples for laboratory analysis to determine how the numbers were created and when the damage occurred.
The timing and nature of the markings have drawn immediate scrutiny. Restaurant industry slang uses "86" as shorthand for removing or stopping something, while 47 is Donald Trump's presidential number. A Department of Interior spokesperson labeled the incident "deranged vandalism" and stressed that any threat against the president would be investigated fully.
The incident echoes a similar case from April in which former FBI Director James Comey faced federal charges over an Instagram photograph showing seashells arranged in the same numbers on a beach. The Department of Justice charged Comey with two felonies, including making a threat against the president and transmitting that threat across state lines via social media. Comey removed the post and stated he did not realize the numbers carried threatening connotations, adding that he opposes violence in all forms. He has maintained his innocence and pledged to fight the charges.
The National Mall discovery arrives as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary celebration, with the "Great American State Fair" scheduled to feature events across the landmark area in coming weeks. The location has recently undergone extensive renovations personally overseen by Trump, including a $13.1 million restoration of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool that transformed its appearance from a "gray stone" finish to an "American-flag blue" design.
