Marine veteran and oyster farmer crushes Maine Democratic primary despite scandals

Graham Platner won Maine's Democratic Senate primary with 72% of the vote, securing the party's nomination to challenge Republican incumbent Susan Collins in November. The Marine veteran and oyster farmer's victory came despite a contentious campaign marked by repeated controversies.

Platner's path to the nomination was complicated by scrutiny over old Reddit posts, a tattoo that drew Nazi symbol comparisons, sexually explicit messages sent early in his marriage, and accusations from a former girlfriend of physical intimidation, which Platner has denied.

Governor Janet Mills, Platner's main primary opponent, suspended her campaign in April but kept her name on the ballot. Her decision to withdraw cleared the field for Platner, who won decisively anyway.

The November matchup against Collins carries high stakes for Senate control. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority, and Democrats view the Maine seat as essential to flipping the chamber. Collins is running for her sixth six-year term.

Author James Rodriguez: "Platner's primary win shows that even significant baggage can't derail a candidate when party machinery gets behind him, but Collins will have a potent closing argument in the general election."
