Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have finalized a restructured contract that extends the quarterback's tenure with the franchise by two additional years and bumps his total compensation north of half a billion dollars.
The deal runs through the 2033 season, keeping Mahomes in a Chiefs uniform until he turns 38. The restructured agreement is worth $504.75 million, with performance incentives and escalators capable of pushing the package beyond $520 million. Mahomes will average $63.1 million annually under the new terms, a figure that positions him at the top of the quarterback market.
The two-time MVP originally signed a landmark 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, a deal that set the standard for quarterback compensation across the NFL. That agreement has undergone regular offseason adjustments as the team continues to manage salary cap constraints while building championship-caliber rosters around its star signal-caller.
Recent quarterback deals have reset market expectations. Dak Prescott's four-year extension established a league-leading average of $60 million per year. Other top-tier quarterbacks including Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen have since signed lucrative long-term agreements that prompted the Chiefs to ensure Mahomes remained among the league's highest-paid players.
Mahomes spent the offseason recovering from surgery on his left knee after suffering a torn ligament in the final moments of a December loss to the Chargers. He has been fully present throughout Kansas City's offseason program, which concludes this week with the mandatory three-day minicamp. The quarterback appears on track for the upcoming season.
Mahomes has delivered three Super Bowl championships to Kansas City and claimed two MVP awards during his tenure with the franchise.
Author James Rodriguez: "The Chiefs are making a calculated bet that Mahomes will remain elite deep into his thirties, and based on what we've seen, it's a bet worth taking."
