Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Hits Switch 2 in October with 12 New Games

Nintendo revealed Nintendo Switch Sports Resort during its latest Direct presentation, confirming the spiritual successor to the beloved Wii Sports Resort will launch exclusively on Switch 2 on October 22nd. The new entry will ship with a dozen sports activities ranging from traditional fare like tennis and bowling to quirky entries such as thumb wrestling and skateboarding.

The full roster includes archery, boxing, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, bowling, basketball, golf, thumb wrestling, skateboarding, power cruising, prop plane, and jump rope. While the lineup draws inspiration from its Wii predecessor, Nintendo has made notable changes. Gone are the sword dueling game, frisbee, cycling, and canoeing modes that appeared in Wii Sports Resort. In their place are fresh additions like jump rope and thumb wrestling, alongside returning favorites such as basketball and power cruising.

The original Nintendo Switch Sports debuted in 2022 and performed commercially well, though it failed to establish the cultural footprint of the Wii Sports phenomenon. Critics noted the game succeeded as a party experience but lacked the mechanical depth needed for sustained engagement. The reception suggested Nintendo faced an uphill climb in convincing players that motion controls and accessible gameplay could deliver more than surface-level fun.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort arrives as the company builds out its launch library for Switch 2, the next-generation hardware expected to drive a significant refresh of the platform's game offerings. The title's October release date positions it alongside what will likely be other major announcements from the publisher's holiday slate.

Author Emily Chen: "Nintendo's betting that a fresh coat of paint and a dozen new activities will make party sports gaming matter again on Switch 2, but whether thumb wrestling can carry a $60 game remains the real question."
