Nintendo has officially unveiled a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time built for Switch 2, ending months of speculation about the project. The announcement came during today's June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation, with the company confirming a release window later this year.
The reveal trailer offered limited gameplay glimpses, focusing instead on atmospheric imagery including a tapestry and Link asleep. Visual comparisons suggest the remake will chart a new aesthetic direction for the franchise. Unlike the painterly style that defined Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, this version leans toward a more realistic presentation.
The original 1998 N64 release fundamentally shaped how millions of players experienced 3D adventure games. Exploring Hyrule's expansive world for the first time, traversing landscapes on horseback, and solving intricate dungeons defined a generation of gaming. Nearly three decades later, the title remains one of Nintendo's most celebrated works.
This won't be gamers' first chance to revisit the classic in enhanced form. Nintendo released an upgraded version for the 3DS handheld in 2011. More recently, the original became accessible on Nintendo Switch through the Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack subscription service, a benefit that will extend to Switch 2 owners as well.
The remake announcement was one of several major reveals during today's Direct showcase. Additional Nintendo Switch 2 titles and updates were also previewed during the event.
