Rep. Richard Hudson, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, moved Tuesday to contain fallout from President Trump's casual declaration that he does not "care about the midterms," insisting the remark was taken out of context and does not reflect the president's actual priorities.
Speaking at Axios AM Live, Hudson argued that Trump's statement during a recent Cabinet meeting was aimed at Iran, not at the electoral fortunes of his party. Trump had said he would not moderate his foreign policy stance or negotiate with Tehran because of pressure from midterm politics.
"President Trump cares deeply," Hudson told Axios' Kate Santaliz. "The world is safer because of what President Trump has done in Iran. And so, you know, that was the context. The context wasn't that he doesn't care what people are going through."
The full quote from Trump paints a starker picture. "They thought they were going to out-wait me, you know. 'We'll out-wait him. He's got the midterms.' I don't care about the midterms," Trump said, according to notes from the meeting. That comment followed another remark in which Trump suggested he does not dwell on Americans' economic hardship, saying "I don't think about Americans' financial situation. I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon."
The situation presents a political headache for Republicans as they prepare for the midterm election cycle. Rising prices tied to Trump's confrontational Iran policy have become a flash point for voter discontent. Polls suggest Democrats are capitalizing on kitchen-table concerns that Republicans have struggled to address.
Recent polling from AtlasIntel shows Democrats leading the generic House ballot 55 percent to 40 percent. The same survey found Democratic advantages on every major economic issue tested, including cost of living and overall economic performance.
Hudson insisted during his Tuesday appearance that Trump remains engaged on these issues. "You know, he and I have conversations all the time about it. He cares deeply about what people are going through," Hudson said, framing Trump's comments as rhetorical emphasis on national security rather than indifference to political consequences.
Author James Rodriguez: "Hudson's spin is almost impressive in its ambition, but voters remember what Trump actually said, and no amount of context-setting erases that kind of candor."
