Xbox Denies Last-Minute PS5 Snub for Gears of War: E-Day After Logo Leak

Microsoft is pushing back against speculation that it hastily yanked Gears of War: E-Day from PlayStation after an accidental image leak suggested otherwise. The official Xbox Podcast briefly published promotional art featuring the PS5 logo alongside the October 6, 2026 release date before the company scrubbed it from circulation.

The slip-up reignited debate about whether the gears-and-chainsaws franchise would reach Sony's platform. Walmart's June 6 placeholder listing for a PS5 version had already fueled those expectations. But during its Games Showcase, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed E-Day as an exclusive for Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Aaron Greenberg, Xbox's vice president of games marketing, addressed the fallout directly. "I can confirm this is not true," he said in response to claims that Microsoft pulled the game from PS5 at the last minute. "We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase."

Greenberg added context about the decision-making timeline. "A lot has changed since Asha came into role 107 days ago. We are moving fast and it's frankly pretty energizing inside the hallways here. I was made aware of these exclusives roughly a month in advance."

The leaked artwork, captured and spread online by ResetEra users and Reddit communities before deletion, shows the game promotion with PS5 branding intact. Whether that image represented an earlier phase of development or a genuine multiplatform plan remains unclear. Microsoft has kept its exclusivity strategy under tight wraps as it recalibrates its approach to third-party partnerships.

E-Day marks a departure from Gears' recent handling. Gears of War: Reloaded, the ground-up remaster of the original game, launched on PS5 in August 2025 alongside Xbox and PC versions. The prequel's exclusivity signals a shift in how Microsoft deploys its franchises.

The game was first announced in 2024 and generated strong interest after yesterday's gameplay reveal. Xbox is running a multiplayer beta on August 6, giving players their first hands-on experience with the title.

Author Emily Chen: "Whether this was always Xbox exclusive or a genuine multiplatform consideration that got scrapped, the messaging disaster speaks volumes about Microsoft's internal chaos right now."
