Firesprite's Until Dawn 2 officially exists, and it's abandoning the snowy slopes for something far warmer and considerably more paranormal. The sequel landed during Sony's June 2026 State of Play presentation with a 2027 launch window for PS5.
The shift in setting marks a clean departure from Supermassive Games' original winter nightmare. Instead of teenagers trapped on a mountainside, Until Dawn 2 follows a crew of ghost hunters known for their paranormal content channel, Dead True. There's one problem: they've built their entire reputation on staged scares and never actually encountered anything supernatural.
That changes when the group encounters genuine horrors for the first time, forcing them to survive the night with real stakes on the line. Sony's official description promises a modern horror experience loaded with "intrigue, emotion, twists, and the kind of choices that will keep you up at night."
The core mechanics from the franchise's DNA remain intact. The Butterfly Effect system returns, meaning player decisions will ripple through the story in meaningful ways. The mysterious Dr. Hill also appears to be back in some capacity, with Peter Stormare returning to the role.
Until Dawn 2 follows a busy stretch for the franchise. The original launched on PS4 over a decade ago, received a full remake that arrived on PS5 just months ago, and inspired a live-action film that explored the universe in yet another direction. With the movie and the remake both introducing fresh audiences to the world, the timing for a full sequel makes commercial sense.
Firesprite emphasized that honoring the series' identity remained central to development. "Part of our mission from day one has been honoring that core DNA: character drama, tough choices, and those unforgettable horror moments that made the first game so special," the team said in a statement.
The studio plans to share more details about story, cast, and gameplay in the months ahead before the 2027 launch. The reveal trailer teased "everyone can live" and "everyone can die" scenarios, suggesting multiple branching paths and endings tied to player choices.
Author Emily Chen: "Moving a horror franchise from winter isolation to a tropical ghost-hunting premise is bold, and if Firesprite can nail the tone shift while keeping what made the original click, this could feel genuinely fresh."
