Spider-Man Won't Show Up in Marvel's Wolverine, But His Arch-Enemy Will

Marvel's Wolverine exists in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man games, but don't expect the web-slinger to make a cameo. Creative director Marcus Smith made it clear to IGN that despite both franchises inhabiting the same fictional world, there will be no crossover between them. Spider-Man sits out this one entirely.

The decision mirrors the Spider-Man trilogy, where Wolverine never appeared despite sharing the same universe. It's a choice that keeps each game focused on its own hero and story, rather than diluting either property with guest star appearances.

What caught observers off guard, however, is who Wolverine does team up with. In gameplay footage, players saw him partnering with Jean Grey for coordinated takedowns. But Insomniac revealed something far more intriguing: Wolverine and Sabretooth, one of Logan's greatest nemeses, actually fight alongside each other at points in the game.

Game director Mike Daly explained the dynamic isn't a traditional alliance. Instead, the two mutants end up battling a common enemy together, but their competitive nature means they're constantly at odds even while fighting on the same side. Sabretooth doesn't set up kills for Wolverine; he steals them. Combat banter highlights their friction, turning what could have been a straightforward team mechanic into something with real personality and tension.

This approach differs sharply from Wolverine's partnership with Jean Grey, where cooperation feels more genuine and tactical. The Sabretooth dynamic is antagonistic by design, pulling from the deep rivalry embedded in the comics.

Another point of separation from the Spider-Man games: you play only as Wolverine throughout. Spider-Man 2 famously let players control Venom for an entire sequence, and earlier games featured sections where MJ was playable. Marvel's Wolverine ditches that variety. Daly said the team wanted to maintain singular focus on Logan from start to finish, with no side missions or story beats featuring alternate playable characters.

The game launches September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.

Author Emily Chen: "Keeping Wolverine solo is the right call for a revenge-driven character, but the Sabretooth dynamic sounds like the real story hook here."
