Kratos Steps Back, Faye Takes the Wheel in New God of War

PlayStation's latest State of Play delivered a surprise that sent shockwaves through the gaming world: Kratos, the face of the franchise for two decades, is benched. His wife Faye is now the protagonist of God of War Laufey, and the studio behind the series is ready to explain why.

Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica Studio, knew this was coming long before the announcement. Back in 2018, while working on the previous God of War, he identified Faye as a character whose story demanded exploration. "The character to usher us into this sort of new world is this character, who is such an anchor to the rebirth of where we were going with the franchise," Barlog said in an exclusive conversation ahead of the reveal.

The decision isn't meant as abandonment of Kratos. Game director Ariel Lawrence emphasized that the studio sees this as expansion rather than departure. "We'll always tell stories about Kratos, but I think for us, it was just a chance to talk about somebody who was so pivotal to the beginning and get to know them and push beyond into this new world and give us some place to be surprised and see how things connect," Lawrence explained.

Faye has haunted the recent God of War games in ways fans may not have fully appreciated. Barlog described her presence in the Norse saga as invisible yet all-encompassing. "She was omnipresent but visually not represented. In 2018 she was a feeling; she was a phantom and a specter but one whose tendrils stretched out through the entirety of the narrative," he said. That phantom quality, paradoxically, gave her a kind of quiet power that made creators hunger to show who she truly was.

The combat system reflects Faye's distinct identity. Unlike Kratos, who operates with the unmovable force of a brick wall, Faye brings a different flavor of brutality to the fight. Lawrence discussed how the team drew from Santa Monica Studio's full catalog to craft her moveset. "The Greek era had an influence on Faye. The Norse era has an influence on Faye," Lawrence noted. The result blends the studio's more nimble combat traditions with the gritty, up-close techniques that defined the recent Norse games, creating something fresh while maintaining franchise DNA.

The first twenty minutes of gameplay, shown during the event, confirmed that Faye is every bit as fierce as her legendary husband. Her fighting style carries the weight and impact players expect from a God of War protagonist, just channeled through a different lens.

Santa Monica Studio has not announced a release date for Laufey yet, though the glimpse of early gameplay suggests development is well underway.

Author Emily Chen: "Making the protagonist swap work this well is no small feat, but the studio's willingness to deepen Faye rather than just shuffle the roster shows real creative confidence."
