The Pokémon Trading Card Game is pulling out the stops for its 30th anniversary. The company has announced a splashy new expansion called 30th Celebration that launches globally on September 16, and it's shaping up to be a collector's dream, assuming you can actually get your hands on it.
Every single card in the set will be foil. That's right, no regular cards at all. Each booster pack contains five foil cards plus one foil basic energy card, a first for the franchise. The total number of cards in the full set has not been disclosed.
The headliners here are big. Base Set Charizard is returning, along with Mew and Mewtwo ex cards. But the real showstopper is 30 brand new illustrations of Pikachu, spread across what appears to be multiple Pikachu cards. These fresh takes on the franchise mascot were unveiled in a trailer released today.
Beyond the yellow mouse, the set leans heavily on legendary Pokémon. Dialga, Ho-Oh, Xerneas, Miraidon, Lunala, Kyogre, Zacian and Zekrom all appear. The Pokémon Company is also bringing back fan favorites like Sylveon, Greninja, Slowpoke and Meowth, blending new art with reprints of classic cards from the TCG's three-decade run.
One major addition is a new card rarity called Futuristic Rare. These cards feature eye-catching artwork by renowned Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN, depicting Pokémon in what the company describes as striking visuals evoking hope toward an unknown future. Each Futuristic Rare card showcases vibrant new visuals.
The timing underscores the TCG's explosive resurgence. The Pokémon Company manufactured over 10 billion trading cards last year alone. Since production began, the company has churned out a staggering 85 billion cards total. Yet demand has consistently outpaced supply, with constant sell-outs, scalping, and in-store chaos plaguing releases. The popularity has also spawned a wave of retail theft, with dozens of trading card stores broken into across the United States.
The 30th Celebration set is expected to be another instant classic that flies off shelves. Start lining up now, and hope your local card shop manages to stock enough inventory to meet the inevitable rush.
Author Emily Chen: "The all-foil gambit is bold, but if anyone can pull off an entire premium set, it's Pokémon at the height of the TCG boom."
