Wembanyama erupts as Spurs force Game 7 with dominant blowout

Victor Wembanyama delivered exactly what his coach demanded, and the San Antonio Spurs responded with a suffocating defensive showcase that sent the Western Conference finals to a deciding seventh game.

The Spurs dismantled the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 on Thursday night at home, with Wembanyama posting 28 points and 10 rebounds to power the victory. The dominant performance keeps San Antonio alive in the series after dropping Game 5, 127-114.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had made it clear after Tuesday's loss that his superstar needed to step up. Wembanyama answered within seconds of tipoff, draining two three-pointers and swatting a shot in the game's opening 90 seconds as San Antonio jumped ahead and never looked back.

The Thunder never mounted a serious threat. San Antonio built a 15-point lead early in the second quarter, though Oklahoma City clawed back to within five before halftime, trailing 61-54 going into the break.

The real damage came in the third quarter. The Spurs' defense turned suffocating, engineering a devastating 20-0 run that broke the game wide open. Oklahoma City went nearly eight minutes without a point, missing 14 straight shots. The Thunder managed just 13 points for the entire quarter, their lowest output in any quarter this season.

By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the outcome was decided. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault benched Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein to rest them ahead of Game 7.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting, marking his lowest-scoring performance since dropping 14 points against Minnesota in last year's Western Conference finals. The star guard, who had carried Oklahoma City for most of the series, simply couldn't find rhythm against San Antonio's defense.

The Spurs' bench provided crucial support, outscoring the Thunder's reserves 46-38 after being dominated on the scorecards much of the series. Dylan Harper added 18 points off the bench while Stephon Castle contributed 17 points and nine assists with just one turnover.

San Antonio's three-point shooting set the tone early. The Spurs launched eight three-pointers in the first quarter alone, with Wembanyama connecting on three of them. Oklahoma City managed just one of six from distance in that opening frame.

The Thunder got Jalen Williams back on the court for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain, but the All-Star guard's return did little to spark his team. Williams played just 10 minutes and scored one point, coming off the bench for the first time since December 2022 during his rookie season.

Game 7 is set for Saturday in Oklahoma City, with the winner advancing to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks. The Thunder will need to regroup quickly after being outmatched in nearly every facet Thursday night.

Author James Rodriguez: "This is the kind of desperate, complete performance that wins elimination games. Wembanyama showed the aggression Johnson demanded, and San Antonio's third-quarter suffocation was championship-level basketball."
