Rep. Frederica Wilson announced Friday she will retire from Congress, capping a political career that began over a decade ago. The Miami Democrat made the decision public after initially denying reports she had told allies she would step down.
Wilson, who has represented Florida's 24th District since 2010, told the Miami Herald that the moment simply felt right. "I think it's time," she said in explaining her choice to leave office.
The 83-year-old had faced mounting pressure to reconsider running for another term. In recent months, she missed significant stretches of House votes while recovering from major eye surgery, drawing scrutiny from observers questioning whether she could effectively serve her constituents.
What made the announcement particularly striking was Wilson's initial response to the reporting. Just days before confirming her retirement, she vehemently denied the story to local allies, telling them it was "a crazy rumor." She reversed course the following Saturday, quietly informing multiple elected officials in her district that she would indeed retire.
Wilson explained her earlier denial by citing political calculation. She said she kept her decision private to avoid creating a vulnerable opening for the legislature or governor to reshape her district. "If I announced that I was retiring, what would the Legislature and the governor do?" she said. "Would District 24 be an easy target because Frederica is no longer there? I'm a strong candidate."
The congressman indicated that faith played a role in her timing. "God said to me, 'Frederica, stay put and trust the process, and when it's time, you will know," she said.
Her departure has already set off a scramble for her seat. State Sen. Shevrin Jones announced Wednesday via social media that he would not seek reelection to the state legislature, hinting instead at exploring a new opportunity. "While one chapter of service may be coming to a close in my life, I believe another chapter may be beginning," Jones said in a video posted online.
Miami Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert has also been identified as a potential candidate for the position.
