A Santa Clara County judge has sentenced Shannon O'Connor, 52, to 35 years in prison following her conviction on 48 felony counts tied to a scheme that horrified the Los Gatos community and shocked the Bay Area.
O'Connor, known locally as the "Los Gatos party mom," was found guilty in March of child endangerment, dissuading witnesses from reporting crimes, and facilitating forcible sexual assault of minors. The sentence represents the maximum penalty available under California law. She must also register as a sex offender.
Over a series of gatherings at her home, O'Connor purchased alcohol including Fireball whiskey and vodka specifically for teenagers, predominantly aged 14 and 15. Court records show she supplied condoms and allowed the minors to drink until they became physically ill, then refused to call for medical help. In multiple instances, she actively placed intoxicated teenagers into rooms together or encouraged sexual contact between them while they were too inebriated to consent.
Victims who testified in court described being sexually assaulted or deeply traumatized during these events. O'Connor kept the parties hidden from other parents and from her own husband throughout the scheme.
Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen issued a statement condemning O'Connor's actions. "This isn't some fun parent giving sips of wine spritzers to kids," Rosen wrote. "She facilitated dangerous and drunken sex acts with these children. She risked their lives and damaged their psyches."
In court, O'Connor expressed remorse, telling the victims: "My actions are the cause for your pain and I am ashamed. And I face every day knowing that I was the cause." She also said she was "not sorry for myself, I am sorry for all of you and what I put you through," adding that she hoped they could find some comfort in knowing she would be punished for years to come.
Her defense attorney indicated that O'Connor had hosted the gatherings during the Covid-19 pandemic in an attempt to help her son's social development during the isolation period.
Author James Rodriguez: "This case reveals how predatory behavior can hide in plain sight within a community, and why accountability matters for protecting children."
