Dragon Quest 12 Gets Complete Overhaul, New Name, and Mysterious Hero

Square Enix dropped a major revelation about Dragon Quest 12 during the series' 40th anniversary celebration, confirming that the long-gestating sequel underwent a complete development restart. The game is now called Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams, replacing the previously announced Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.

Executive producer Yosuke Saito explained the shift in a special anniversary video, noting that the original version encountered significant obstacles during development. After extensive conversations with legendary designer Yuji Horii, the team made the difficult choice to scrap their work and begin anew.

"Work on the original version hit a lot of hurdles along the way," Saito said. "But as we kept talking with Mr. Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start over from scratch."

The restart brought sweeping changes to the game's foundation. The protagonist, narrative, and overall themes have been reimagined. The hero now experiences mysterious visions during sleep, with the plot exploring what lies beyond these dreams. The darker tone originally planned for The Flames of Fate appears to have shifted toward brighter, more optimistic territory.

"The game has gone in a different direction to what we originally announced, but I think you'll enjoy it," Horii said during the presentation.

Despite the fundamental redesign, classic Dragon Quest DNA remains intact. The game will retain the iconic character designs of the late Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama's signature orchestral score. Both artists, who passed away in 2024 and 2021 respectively, completed their work for Beyond Dreams before their deaths. Toriyama and Sugiyama had contributed to every mainline Dragon Quest title since the original 1986 release.

Saito promised that the reboot will push the franchise forward with innovative gameplay mechanics. "Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams will evolve the RPG series to the next level with plenty of things you've never seen in a DQ game before," he stated, though he declined to offer specifics.

The wait for Dragon Quest 12 has already stretched nearly a decade. The game was first announced in 2021 during the series' 35th anniversary, and the last mainline entry, Dragon Quest 11, arrived in 2017. No release window has been announced for Beyond Dreams, meaning fans will need considerably more patience.

Square Enix used the anniversary event to unveil additional news. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2, featuring dual protagonists Nera and Bianca from Dragon Quest 5. Additionally, Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is headed to Switch 2 on September 24.

Author Emily Chen: "A complete restart is a gutsy move that could either pay off spectacularly or signal deeper production troubles, but if Horii and Saito are confident, Dragon Quest fans should probably trust their judgment."
