A catastrophic tank failure at a Washington state packaging facility claimed multiple lives early Tuesday, with emergency responders still working to assess the full scale of the disaster.
The incident occurred at Nippon Dynawave Packaging in Longview when a tank holding white liquor, a caustic chemical solution used in paper production, ruptured without warning. The plant operates as both a kraft pulp mill and liquid packaging facility, employing roughly 1,000 people.
Fire department officials characterized the event as an "implosion" that left numerous workers with severe chemical burns. Michael Gorsuch of the Longview fire department told local media that injuries ranged from critical to life-threatening conditions.
By late Tuesday morning, authorities confirmed fatalities connected to the rupture but withheld specific numbers and identities pending family notification. Emergency responders transitioned into recovery operations as crews worked alongside plant personnel to contain and neutralize the remaining chemical product and damaged equipment.
Fire department officials stated there was no immediate public threat from the incident itself, though residents were advised to avoid the area. Work continued to mitigate hazards and secure the facility.
The Longview facility represents one of the region's major employers and industrial operations. Nippon Dynawave Packaging declined immediate comment, as did county emergency management.
The Washington disaster follows a separate chemical crisis in Southern California, where authorities evacuated approximately 50,000 residents from Garden Grove last week over concerns that a damaged chemical tank could explode. Orange County officials lifted most evacuation orders Monday after determining the immediate explosion risk had been eliminated, though they cautioned that public safety threats remain as mitigation work continues.
