After a decade of waiting, Dead by Daylight players have their answer: Jason Voorhees is coming to the asymmetrical horror game. The Friday the 13th killer will join the roster of iconic slashers on June 16, marking a major milestone for developer Behaviour Interactive's 10th anniversary celebration.
Getting there, however, required one of the strangest marketing spectacles in gaming history.
On May 22, Behaviour launched a 13-hour livestream featuring nothing but a static image of a cabin in the woods. No music, no announcement, no gameplay footage. Just a cabin. For thirteen hours straight.
Tens of thousands of viewers stayed locked in, desperate for answers. The community had spent weeks theorizing about who would headline the anniversary event. Jason topped most wishlists, but with virtually no leaks to guide expectations, players threw out increasingly wild predictions: Pennywise, Art the Clown, Hello Neighbor, even Jaws as a joke that somehow gained traction.
The livestream finally broke up the monotony in the final 10 percent with brief eerie moments: bird calls, a bicycle passing by, creatures crawling across the ground, camera glitches. Otherwise, it was pure waiting. By hour 4, frustrated fans were posting on Reddit about the "traumatizing" ordeal. Some genuinely convinced themselves Slender Man would be revealed. Others mocked up the cabin itself as the next playable killer.
When Jason was finally unveiled after the 13-hour slog, reactions split sharply. Many players celebrated the reveal of a killer they had requested for years. "NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING THAT IT'D HAPPEN ONE DAY," one Reddit user posted. "Welcome to the gang, Jason," wrote another. "Been waiting for years for this day."
But plenty questioned the marketing approach itself. "I'm both happy it's Jason finally being added, but underwhelmed by his reveal," one player said. "This entire setup really felt like it had nothing to do with anything related to him. The whole stream felt very analogue horror."
The reveal also raised questions about scope. While Jason is confirmed as a new Killer, players remain uncertain whether the Friday the 13th crossover will include Survivors or new maps. Behaviour has not yet confirmed those details.
Jason's arrival represents a major breakthrough for Behaviour after years of wrestling with a notoriously complicated licensing situation. Game director Mathieu Cote previously described the legal issues surrounding Jason and Friday the 13th as a "legal quagmire" and "tar pit" in a 2023 interview. Those obstacles now cleared, Jason joins an already formidable lineup that includes Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Ghostface, Chucky, Dracula, and Leatherface.
More details about Jason's abilities and how he will function in the Fog are expected in the coming weeks.
Author Emily Chen: "Ten years of asking finally paid off, but Behaviour really tested the community's patience with that livestream stunt."
