Space Marine 2 Gets Massive Purgation Overhaul with New Mission, Siege Revamp

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 landed a surprise update just as the Warhammer Skulls showcase kicked off. Patch 13, rolled out across all platforms, packs enough changes to reshape how players approach both campaign and multiplayer modes.

The centerpiece is Operation: Purgation, a fresh PvE mission set in the Kadaku swamps where Combat Squad Veridian must rescue Nozick from a captured Mechanicus facility after communications go dark. Beyond that single-player addition, the patch reshuffles combat fundamentals and introduces a new practice space called the Battle Simulator, where players can test loadouts, weapons, and enemy matchups without stakes.

The Siege Mode overhaul represents the most substantial structural change. Players now face steeper difficulty curves that hit sooner, creating shorter but more intense runs. A new Blessings and Atonements system arrives every five waves, giving players permanent buffs alongside shifting penalties. The timer no longer means instant failure either, instead ramping up enemy strength when it triggers. Additional bosses, more shop items, new objectives, and weekly Accolade rewards round out the redesign.

Developers are rethinking how guns feel in PvE. Bolter weapons saw non-headshot damage jump roughly 30 percent as part of a headshot system rework aimed at closing the gap between precision and body shots. The change required rebalancing enemy damage zones across all difficulty tiers. Secondary weapons shifted unpredictably during this pass, which the team flagged as unintentional and promised to fix soon.

Individual weapons received targeted tuning. The Plasma Incinerator's common shot climbed 40 percent damage, while the Plasma Pistol gained 30 percent. Neo Volkite heat accumulation increased roughly 16 percent. The Power Sword swings faster across all variants, and the Power Axe's Power Wave perk finally works as designed.

Customization expanded significantly. Players can now swap perk loadouts on the fly during sessions, and Wargear 2.0 lets each class equip multiple cosmetic pieces simultaneously, such as capes, iron halos, and sensor antennas. Upcoming patches will add robes and tabards to the shared wargear pool. New free cosmetics include Kakophoni Purple armor tones, extra cloth and lens colors spanning Death Guard Green to Bad Moon Yellow, new greaves patterns, and decals honoring successor chapters.

The Iron Hands Chapter Pack rounds out the First Founding loyalist series. Season Pass 2 owners get it free, unlocking a Techmarine Champion skin, an exclusive Omnissian Axe, mechanical armor pieces honoring the 10th Legion, and four successor chapter variants. Three new Heroic weapons became available through Accolades: a Relic Battle-Worn Plasma Pistol, White Scars Chainsword, and Encarmine Axe.

Class balance changes lean toward future direction rather than aggressive retuning. Techmarine saw boosts to Explosives Adept and Reinforced Position, while Heavy gained a major Coolant Reserve bump from 15 to 50 percent damage. The developers signaled plans to overhaul Tactical, Vanguard, and Heavy perks in coming updates, starting with Tactical's melee build variety and Vanguard's one-dimensional ability design.

A new one-handed Bolt Carbine sidearm arrives for Assault and Bulwark classes, and the Pyreblaster Canister equipment functions as an incendiary grenade that requires being shot to detonate. Trials of Resolve introduces harder Ordeals with exclusive rewards.

Behind the scenes, stability improvements, memory optimizations, and faster loading times suggest the team is tightening the technical foundation alongside feature work. Minor level geometry fixes and quality-of-life tweaks like post-finisher invulnerability windows address friction points players encounter regularly.
