Sony Drops State of Play Date: Wolverine Reveal and 60 Minutes of PS5 News Coming June 2

Sony is bringing back State of Play on June 2, the company announced via PlayStation Blog. The showcase will run for more than an hour starting at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm UK time, and will kick off with a fresh look at Marvel's Wolverine ahead of the game's September 15 launch.

"State of Play returns Tuesday, June 2 with more than 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals from top studios around the world," Tim Turi, Content Communications Manager at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in the announcement.

Beyond Wolverine, Sony has signaled that the June event will deliver news on other PS5 games in development. The company has not detailed the full slate of titles set to appear, but given the timing and length of the presentation, expectations are high for announcements from major PlayStation studios.

Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Guerrilla's Horizon Hunters Gathering, and Haven's Fairgame are among the titles that could potentially surface during the broadcast. Several other first-party developers, including Bend Studio, Media Molecule, and Santa Monica Studio, have been quieter on their upcoming projects and could use the platform for new reveals.

Sony has also reportedly committed to keeping narrative single-player games like Wolverine and Intergalactic exclusive to PS5, abandoning its previous strategy of bringing such titles to PC. Multiplayer games will continue to release on both platforms.

The State of Play announcement comes as PlayStation faces increased pressure to justify recent price hikes on both hardware and PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Sony has attributed the increases to market conditions, but the cumulative effect has made PlayStation gaming more expensive for consumers, particularly those looking to access the full ecosystem.

The June 2 showcase arrives amid a busy season for gaming industry presentations. Microsoft is holding an Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, and Nintendo is expected to announce a Direct sometime around the same period, as it typically does each year.

Author Emily Chen: "Sony's got to bring real exclusives and release windows to this thing, or the price hikes start to look tone-deaf."
