Arc System Works' upcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls stirred confusion last month when early reports suggested its story mode would be nothing but cutscenes. That's no longer the case. The developer has now confirmed that Episode Mode, designed for casual players, will feature actual 4v4 battles woven throughout the narrative.
Producer Takeshi Yamanaka and director Kazuto 'Pachi' Sekine clarified the situation in a recent interview, explaining that battles are "incorporated throughout" the story experience. These aren't random skirmishes either, but encounters that drive the plot forward. The duo emphasized that the mode maintains an approachable feel, styled like reading an interactive comic book.
The story spans roughly 10 hours and builds toward a confrontation with two new antagonists: a mysterious villain called The Champion and his associate Promoter. Players choose from five default teams to battle their way through the campaign, with the goal of facing The Champion in the final showdown to prevent him from destroying Earth.
What sets Episode Mode apart visually is its animated comic book presentation. Cutscenes are voiced in 10 languages, with players flipping through illustrated panels. The PS5 version takes full advantage of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback to enhance the reading experience.
The five default teams were constructed with the story in mind, but players who want flexibility can build custom rosters in other game modes. The core 4v4 tag team system revolves around designating one character as the team leader, a choice that feeds into the game's "Team Generation" feature. This system automatically assigns team names based on the leader's characteristics and the other three members, though players can override it with custom names.
Arc System Works applied its signature anime-inspired art style to Marvel's roster, a direction that came from Marvel's own request. Director Sekine framed this as a core philosophy: "from Japan to the world." The developer received creative latitude in interpreting each character's design within Marvel's guidelines, submitting work to Marvel for final approval.
Yamanaka stressed that Episode Mode isn't gatekept by Marvel fandom. The story includes glossaries and character bios so newcomers can follow the narrative and understand relationships between characters. "I'd be happy if Marvel Tokon served as a gateway for people to discover the movies and comics as well," he said.
Sekine also hinted that alternative costumes for characters are coming, though specifics remain under wraps.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launches August 6, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Author Emily Chen: "Finally getting clarity that this story mode has real fights in it should put casual players at ease, and the 10-hour length sounds like they're actually committed to making this a substantial experience, not just Marvel characters in a fighting game demo."
