The Guardian's New Political Podcast Pairs Two Heavy-Hitting Journalists

The Guardian has launched Stateside with Kai and Carter, a US video podcast helmed by two award-winning reporters who bring substantial credentials to the task of covering American politics and culture.

Kai Wright, a Peabody award winner, has spent years examining how history, power, and national identity intersect. Before joining the Guardian project, Wright hosted Notes From America with Kai Wright on WNYC, a call-in program that reached public radio stations across the country. His documentary work includes investigations into the early AIDS epidemic, juvenile justice systems, and the political rise of the MAGA movement, the latter spanning four seasons of original reporting. Wright has authored multiple books on Black American history and contributed to Four Hundred Souls, a community history that became a bestseller.

Carter Sherman brings a different but complementary focus to the partnership. Since 2023, she has led the Guardian's coverage of gender, power, and politics in the US, with particular emphasis on reproductive rights. Sherman previously worked as a senior reporter for Vice News, where her video and written work earned a National Press Club Journalism Award, a Scripps Howard award, and four Emmy nominations. Her recent book, The Second Coming, examines how younger Americans are grappling with questions of sex, identity, and control in the post-Roe landscape. She holds a degree from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism and has contributed commentary to outlets including the New York Times, NPR, and PBS.

The pairing reflects the Guardian's attempt to bring analytical depth to ongoing debates about American politics and society. Wright's expertise in historical context and cultural movements complements Sherman's sharp focus on how policy shifts, particularly around reproductive freedoms, are reshaping the political landscape and younger generations' understanding of identity.

Author James Rodriguez: "This is the kind of hosting lineup that signals the Guardian is serious about competing in the crowded podcast space, not just filling airtime."
