A Michigan court has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to James Shirah, 24, for fatally striking his groomsman with an SUV during the celebration of his own wedding in August 2024.
The killing of Terry Taylor Jr, 29, unfolded hours after Shirah married Savanah Collier. The couple had hosted festivities at Flint Pizzeria before moving the party to a house. An argument erupted between the newlyweds and Taylor during the afterparty. Shirah left the scene briefly, then returned and hit Taylor with his vehicle at high speed, sending the groomsman airborne, according to court records.
Taylor was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The newlyweds did not report the incident to police until the following day, a delay that prosecutor David Leyton said complicated the investigation.
Shirah pleaded no contest in April to three felony counts: second-degree murder, operating with a suspended license, and causing death by failing to remain at an accident scene. Judge Khary Hanible sentenced him Monday in Genesee County Court.
At sentencing, Shirah told the court his actions were unintentional. "The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse," he said, according to local reporting. "I will forever be sorry."
The judge acknowledged Shirah's apparent remorse but drew a stark distinction. "Mr Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal," Hanible said. "You are, however, a killer."
Eren Taylor, a cousin of the victim, delivered an emotional victim impact statement at the hearing, describing the gruesome scene she discovered. "When I got to him all I could see was blood," she said, then directly confronting Shirah: "I hope that they throw the book at you."
Evidence presented at trial indicated Shirah had been drinking throughout the day. The circumstances of the argument that sparked the fatal encounter remain undisclosed by police.
Terry Taylor Jr leaves behind four children and a fiancee. His widow is not his only family member grieving. The prosecutor told CBS News at the time: "I've never seen anything quite like this. I've seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding."
Shirah's wife, Savanah Collier, 23, faces her own sentencing on May 26 after pleading no contest to being an accessory to the crime.
Author James Rodriguez: "A bride and groom on what should be the best day of their lives instead became architects of tragedy, and now a man is dead, four children are fatherless, and everyone involved will spend years answering for it."
