Stellar Blade's sequel will no longer have Sony's backing. Developer Shift Up announced it will self-publish the next entry in its action franchise, a strategic shift that opens the door to releases beyond PlayStation.
The Korean studio revealed the change in an earnings presentation, citing the need to control how the Stellar Blade universe reaches players. By moving to what Shift Up calls a "first-party service model," the company expects to shape marketing and messaging around the IP without a platform holder intermediary. Shift Up believes this approach will communicate the franchise's identity "more directly and effectively."
The first Stellar Blade landed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in April 2024, followed by a PC port in June 2025. Both versions received solid player reception, with fans noting the game's blend of combat styles drawn from NieR: Automata and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. IGN scored it 7/10, describing it as "gorgeous and well-crafted" but with "very clear weaknesses."
Self-publishing could signal multiplatform ambitions. During the same earnings call, Shift Up mentioned "actively exploring further platform expansion" for the original game, hinting at potential Nintendo Switch ports. While nothing is confirmed, the company's pivot away from Sony suggests flexibility on where Stellar Blade 2 eventually launches.
Development is moving forward on schedule. Shift Up stated the sequel is "progressing smoothly, on track to meet our targeted quality standards." The company cited three advantages fueling confidence in stronger results: self-publishing capabilities, a sales-focused strategy, and an established fan base. No launch window has been announced.
Author Emily Chen: "Shift Up's break from Sony sends a clear signal that established action franchises no longer need traditional publisher gatekeeping to succeed, especially when the developer has proven it can reach its audience directly."
