Wembanyama joins legends with historic playoff line in Spurs win

Victor Wembanyama etched his name alongside basketball immortality on Friday night, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Shaquille O'Neal as the only players ever to record 35-plus points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a playoff game.

The 7-foot-4 Spurs phenom did it with a 39-point, 15-rebound, five-block performance in a 115-108 victory over Minnesota in Game 3 of their Western Conference semi-final. What set Wembanyama apart: he shot better than 70 percent from the floor, finishing 13 for 18 overall and a pristine 10 for 12 from the free throw line.

The cuts and bruises covering his long arms told the story of a night spent battling in the paint against the Timberwolves. Wembanyama answered his own poor offensive showing in Game 1 with a fourth quarter that left no doubt. He scored 16 points in the final quarter while looking especially dangerous on a spin fadeaway he credited to mentorship from Hakeem Olajuwon, executed perfectly over his former Spurs teammate Rudy Gobert.

"It's good to be along with the big fellas," Wembanyama said after the win.

His performance moved the Spurs to 2-1 in the series and extended their postseason road record to a perfect mark. San Antonio has been dominant away from home, though this marked their first victory in a genuinely competitive contest after rolling past Portland in the opening round with 12-to-21 point margins.

Coach Mitch Johnson praised his team's continued development, particularly noting Wembanyama's rapid evolution in just his seventh career playoff game. The French phenom remains at the center of everything the Spurs accomplish. After setting an NBA postseason record with 12 blocks in Game 1, Wembanyama responded to his quiet offensive night by immediately reasserting dominance on both ends in Game 2, triggering a 38-point blowout victory.

De'Aaron Fox added 17 points for the Spurs while Stephon Castle chipped in 13 points and 12 assists with a team-best plus-17 rating.

Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 32 points and 14 rebounds, and Naz Reid contributed 18 points off the bench. The Timberwolves head home to host Game 4 on Sunday before the series returns to San Antonio for Game 5 on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, the New York Knicks moved within one win of the conference finals with a 108-94 demolition of the Philadelphia 76ers. Jalen Brunson went for 33 points and sealed the win with crucial buckets down the stretch, giving New York a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Mikal Bridges added 23 points for the Knicks while Josh Hart pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds to go with 12 points. Philadelphia remains without forward OG Anunoby, who has been day-to-day with a strained right hamstring despite averaging 21.4 points in the playoffs. Joel Embiid returned from injuries to score 18 points for the Sixers, though his presence was not enough to slow New York's relentless fourth-quarter assault.

Game 4 tips off Sunday in Philadelphia, with the Knicks favored to close out the series.

Author James Rodriguez: "Wembanyama's joining that conversation with the all-time greats is no accident, and the Spurs are learning to win the right way with their young talent breathing down the necks of playoff vets."
