Arrowhead Game Studios has broken its silence on mounting player frustration with Helldivers 2, pledging a slate of improvements to core systems and new content that the studio says will reshape the live service shooter.
The game's Steam reviews crashed into 'mostly negative' territory as disgruntled players vented their frustrations with recent updates and what many perceived as stagnating content. The developer responded by releasing an in-universe transmission laying out a roadmap for the months ahead.
"Helldivers 2 matters to all of us, and we want to be clearer about what we're working on and what's coming next," Arrowhead said in the statement. The studio acknowledged it has expanded its team working on long-term progression systems, signaling a renewed commitment to keeping players engaged.
The Galactic War, the game's overarching campaign structure, is getting a substantial redesign. Arrowhead plans to introduce more meaningful rewards and new community progression mechanics. Major Orders, the game's weekly challenges, will evolve into longer, multi-week themed "Campaigns" with branching outcomes that create real consequences based on player actions. Players should see the first wave of these changes arrive this summer.
Arrowhead also committed to transparency improvements, promising patch notes that more accurately document gameplay adjustments and better explain balance changes. The developer said it would soon discuss technical and performance upgrades separately.
One of the most controversial decisions was placing exosuits, powerful armor variants that fundamentally change how the game plays, behind the premium Exo Experts warbond. The backlash was swift and intense. Arrowhead defended the choice as part of creating a "thematically strong and exciting" cosmetic package, but acknowledged the community's expectations around major gameplay items. "We want to strike the right balance between what's included in Warbonds and what's available through gameplay, so that rewards feel both exciting and fair," the studio said. It also committed to releasing additional vehicles through standard gameplay progression in the future.
Perhaps most significantly, Arrowhead confirmed it has active development underway on new red stratagems, evolved ship mechanics, and progression expansion to level 150 and beyond. "Our goal is to expand these areas in ways that add meaningful new options and support different playstyles, rather than just adding more for the sake of it," the developer teased.
Helldivers 2 launched over two years ago and became PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game ever. But the live service grind has proven challenging to sustain. The game remains a consistent top performer on Steam, yet player sentiment has clearly soured from its launch honeymoon as updates felt incremental and the content pipeline appeared to slow.
Whether Arrowhead can deliver on these promises remains an open question. The studio is simultaneously developing an entirely new game while trying to revitalize its aging flagship. Some of the bigger asks from the community, like expanding squad sizes, increasing map scale, or introducing entirely new game modes, have not been explicitly addressed. Game director Mikael Eriksson previously indicated that such game-changing updates were under consideration, but no firm commitments have materialized.
Author Emily Chen: "Arrowhead is finally saying the right things, but the skepticism is earned after two years of slow updates and missteps like the exosuit paywall."
