Nintendo blindsided players with a shadow-dropped Direct announcement of a brand new Star Fox remake headed to Switch 2. The game, simply titled Star Fox, is a ground-up overhaul of the 1997 classic Star Fox 64, bringing the arcade rail-shooter into the modern era with a complete visual refresh.
The remake keeps the core experience intact. Pilots will steer their Arwing across familiar planets like Corneria, fighting alongside series regulars Falco, Peppy and Slippy. Level layouts mirror the original, but the on-rails gameplay has been refined with enhanced controls, allowing players to boost, brake and execute the signature barrel roll maneuver. Ground combat returns too, featuring sequences in the Landmaster tank and Blue-Marine submarine.
Nintendo has expanded the narrative with fresh cutscenes that add story moments between characters, deepening what players experienced in the original. The campaign offers three difficulty tiers, with hard mode removing the safety net of continues after a Game Over.
New control options cater to different player preferences. Switch 2 mouse controls have been added for precision aiming, and two players can share a single Joy-Con to pilot cooperatively, with one handling movement and the other managing weapons. For those chasing nostalgia, the classic N64 controller is also supported.
Beyond the campaign, Battle mode pits players against the rival Star Wolf faction in head-to-head competition. The announcement caps off a decade-long absence for the franchise and follows Fox's brief return in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Star Fox drops exclusively on Switch 2 on June 25.
Author Emily Chen: "Nintendo just handed fans exactly what they wanted without a single teaser, and the setup works perfectly for Switch 2's launch window."
