Voice of Yankees for 36 Years Gone at 87

John Sterling, the radio broadcaster whose voice became inseparable from the New York Yankees across four decades, has died at age 87.

Sterling arrived at WFAN to call Yankees games in 1989 and remained in the booth through April 2024. Over that span, he broadcast 5,420 regular-season contests and 211 postseason games, rarely missing a day at the microphone. His consistency was remarkable: he worked 5,060 consecutive games from 1989 until 2019, a stretch that underscored his dedication to the job.

His tenure coincided with a golden age for the franchise. Sterling was on the call for five World Series championships, becoming the voice many New Yorkers associate with October glory. He developed signature catchphrases, most notably his exuberant "The Yankees win!" that punctuated countless victories and resonated across generations of fans tuning in on their radios.

Sterling's passion and encyclopedic knowledge of the game set him apart. He brought intensity to every pitch and infectious enthusiasm to each win, traits that made him a fixture in Yankees households throughout the Northeast. Even a foul ball that struck him during a 2023 broadcast couldn't keep him away, he returned to work the next day.

The broadcaster's career extended well beyond the Yankees. Before settling into the Bronx booth, Sterling covered the Atlanta Hawks and Braves, then the New York Islanders and New Jersey Nets, building a resume that demonstrated his versatility across sports.

His work earned widespread recognition. Sterling won 12 Sports Emmy Awards during his career and received a nomination for baseball's Hall of Fame, cementing his place in broadcasting history. WFAN released a statement calling him "a WFAN and Yankees radio icon whose voice was synonymous with an entire generation of Yankee fandom." Major League Baseball noted his "signature punctuation of Yankees victories."

Sterling is survived by four children.

Author James Rodriguez: "A broadcaster of his consistency and passion comes along once in a generation, and Sterling was the soundtrack to the best moments Yankees fans experienced for 35 years."
