A group of middle school students became unlikely heroes Wednesday after their school bus driver suffered a medical emergency on a busy four-lane highway in Mississippi, forcing them to take action and bring the vehicle to a stop.
The incident unfolded shortly after the bus left Hancock Middle School in Hancock County with approximately 40 children aboard. Driver Leah Taylor, 46, experienced a sudden asthma attack while operating the bus, leaving her incapacitated behind the wheel.
The students, demonstrating quick thinking and composure under pressure, managed to stop the bus themselves. Emergency responders arrived and provided medical treatment to Taylor at the scene.
School officials recognized the children's response with honors at a subsequent pep rally. As a reward for their level-headedness during the crisis, the district arranged for the group to enjoy a celebratory lunch at a restaurant of their choice.
