Pokémon Go Fest Goes Free for 10th Anniversary Milestone

Niantic is removing the paywall from Pokémon Go Fest Global this summer, marking a major shift in how the game's flagship annual event operates. The two-day celebration on July 11 and 12 will grant all players free access to Special Research tasks and boosted Shiny encounter rates without requiring a paid ticket purchase.

The timing aligns with the mobile game's 10th anniversary, and Niantic is using the occasion to finally introduce Mega Mewtwo in both its X and Y forms. The legendary creature's arrival has been a long time coming, with the game's developers teasing the release for months following a major overhaul to how Mega Pokémon function earlier this year.

Mega Mewtwo will be available exclusively through Super Mega Raids, which demand large coordinated groups to defeat. Players who succeed will have the chance to catch Mewtwo and earn Mega Energy X or Mega Energy Y, allowing them to choose which Mega Evolution form they prefer. Notably, this marks the first instance where different energy types are required for a Pokémon's multiple Mega Evolution options, a departure from how dual-form creatures like Mega Charizard have traditionally worked.

The design choice extends to Mega Level progression as well, which will now track separately for each Mega Evolution variant. Existing progress players have already accumulated will transfer over to the new system. These mechanics appear designed to encourage sustained raiding activity and repeated Mega Evolution throughout the season, though the approach mirrors resource-splitting strategies from previous major events.

While the global event carries no entry fee, players will still consume raid passes and the newly introduced Link Charge currency to participate in battles. How generously Niantic distributes these resources during the event remains unclear.

Before the free global event kicks off, Niantic will host three in-person Go Fest celebrations in Chicago, Copenhagen, and Tokyo. These ticketed regional events will serve as the exclusive first venue for Mega Mewtwo encounters, giving players who attend early access. Tokyo's event has nearly sold out. A major draw of the in-person raids is that they support simultaneous participation from over 1,000 players, providing significant speed bonuses for large-scale coordination.

The regional events will also debut Zeraora, a Mythical creature previously unavailable to most players. Additional attractions include new costumed Pikachu variants, Shiny Wash Rotom, regional Tauros with Shiny potential, Hawaiian-exclusive Comfey, and a Caterpie sporting a Pokéball hat costume.

Author Emily Chen: "Free Go Fest access is smart business that rewards the core audience, but splitting Mega Energy between Mewtwo's forms feels like a transparent energy sink designed to keep players grinding through July."
